Whether these behavioral responses are primarily due to <strong data-start=\"362\" data-end=\"387\">phenotypic plasticity<\/strong> or are instead the result of <strong data-start=\"422\" data-end=\"462\">human-induced selective processes<\/strong>, especially in small populations where genetic drift plays a major role, is still a matter of debate. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"565\" data-end=\"1011\">The study examines the <strong data-start=\"594\" data-end=\"643\">small population of the Apennine brown bear<\/strong><em data-start=\"645\" data-end=\"670\">(Ursus arctos marsicanus<\/em>), which has cohabited with humans in central Italy for thousands of years. The researchers analyzed <strong data-start=\"772\" data-end=\"794\">genomic diversity<\/strong> and identified specific adaptation signals in this population by comparing new whole-genome sequencing data with previously published data from brown bears in central Europe and North America. <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1013\" data-end=\"1687\">The results show that the Apennine brown bear has <strong data-start=\"1076\" data-end=\"1106\">reduced genomic diversity<\/strong>, higher levels of <strong data-start=\"1131\" data-end=\"1149\">inbreeding<\/strong>, and a higher <strong data-start=\"1155\" data-end=\"1185\">realized genetic load<\/strong> than other brown bear populations. At the same time, a unique genetic profile emerges, characterized by <strong data-start=\"1311\" data-end=\"1335\">selection signals<\/strong> in genes associated with <strong data-start=\"1360\" data-end=\"1384\">reduced aggression<\/strong>, such as <em data-start=\"1391\" data-end=\"1396\">DCC<\/em> and <em data-start=\"1399\" data-end=\"1408\">SLC13A5<\/em>. Many of the variants identified in these genes are located in <strong data-start=\"1472\" data-end=\"1507\">noncoding regions of DNA<\/strong> and some appear to affect splicing factor binding sites, underscoring the important role of noncoding variation in defining complex phenotypes.  <\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1689\" data-end=\"2102\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Overall, the results support the hypothesis that <strong data-start=\"1744\" data-end=\"1786\">human-induced selection<\/strong> has promoted behavioral changes even in small, long-isolated populations.
