This is what happened with Gabbietta, a female Marsican brown bear and daughter of Amarena\u2014who was brutally shot to death by a man currently on trial\u2014who was recently spotted with two cubs born this winter. This event goes far beyond a simple nature story. For a population that is among the rarest and most vulnerable in the world, every new litter represents a precious step forward in the fight against extinction. <\/p>\n
The future of the Marsican brown bear hinges on very small numbers. The population numbers only a few dozen individuals, and the survival of each breeding female has an enormous impact on the species\u2019 fate. Even more important is the survival of the cubs during their first years of life\u2014the most critical period, when natural mortality and human-induced threats can jeopardize reproductive success. <\/p>\n
That is why the arrival of two new cubs alongside Gabbietta is news that deserves to be greeted with enthusiasm. It means that the population\u2019s genetic heritage continues to be passed on, that the ecosystems of the Apennines are still capable of providing the conditions necessary for reproduction, and that the conservation efforts carried out over the past few decades can yield concrete results. But precisely because it is good news, it calls for even greater responsibility. <\/p>\n
Curiosity shouldn’t turn into pressure<\/strong><\/p>\n Every year, photos and sightings of bears with their cubs inevitably generate a great deal of interest. It\u2019s understandable: witnessing an encounter with one of Italy\u2019s most iconic animals is an extraordinary experience. The problem arises when the pursuit of excitement or the perfect shot takes precedence over respect for the animal. Photography can help conservation. But it can also harm it. <\/strong><\/p>\n In recent years, nature photography has experienced extraordinary growth. Many images have helped raise awareness of little-known species, raise funds for conservation, and educate millions of people about the importance of biodiversity. When practiced with ethics, expertise, and respect, it is a valuable ally of nature. However, there is a fine line that should never be crossed. <\/p>\n In fact, scientific research has recently begun to document the effects of human disturbance on wildlife with increasing precision. Studies conducted on brown bears in Scandinavia have shown that even seemingly harmless encounters with people on foot can alter the animals\u2019 behavior: they move around more, spend less time foraging, and avoid favorable habitats because they perceive them as risky. The problem isn’t just about bears<\/strong><\/p>\n Conservation biologists and nature photographers have been emphasizing for years that an animal\u2019s well-being must always take precedence over the pursuit of the perfect shot. Getting too close, chasing an animal, forcing it to react, or interrupting natural behaviors such as feeding, resting, or caring for its young means prioritizing a photograph over conservation. Complicating matters is a relatively recent phenomenon: the constant presence of social media in our daily lives, viewed more as an obsession than as a technological tool designed to connect people virtually. <\/p>\n The immediate sharing of photos and geolocation data via social media can turn a single sighting into a draw for dozens of people within a matter of hours. This mechanism is now widely recognized by the scientific community. Some researchers refer to the \u201csocial media effect\u201d or \u201cInstagram effect\u201d on wildlife: viral images and shared locations increase pressure on the rarest species, to the point that in several countries, protected area managers and researchers have chosen not to disclose the locations of the most sensitive sightings or to temporarily restrict access to certain areas during breeding seasons. The Marsican brown bear, due to its rarity, is one of the species that stands to lose the most from this phenomenon. <\/p>\n True success is staying out of the spotlight<\/strong><\/p>\n Conservation isn’t measured by the number of photos posted on social media, but by the number of cubs that survive to adulthood. This goal faces increasing risks every time a location is geotagged, a sighting report is shared carelessly, or dozens of people flock to the same valley in the hope of a close encounter. For all of us, this is only an apparent sacrifice. For this reason, despite our joy at learning that Gabbietta the bear has become the mother of two cubs, we cannot shirk our responsibility and duty to ask for respect and thoughtfulness in responding to this news. Now more than ever, Gabbietta does not need onlookers\u2014she needs peace and quiet. She needs forests traversed in silence, trails walked with respect, and people willing to forgo taking a photo in order to give nature its space. <\/p>\n
