Journey at the roots of the Bear Smart Communities

23 Settembre 2022 | Non categorizzato

In 1995, the Get Bear Smart Society in the community of Whistler in British Columbia, Canada, introduced the Bear Smart Community program in order to implement a set of actions so that people and bears could coexist. The principle was a paradigm shift in people’s attitudes toward bears and other wildlife by replacing fear and misunderstanding with respect and understanding.

As part of the LIFE project Bear-Smart Corridors, Salviamo l’Orso and representatives of the other partners of the project went to British Columbia to know closely the best practices of human-bear coexistence, take inspiration to improve “our” Bear Smart Community model and exchange experiences with many organizations that deal with the coexistence with bear species there. This travel will aim to create guidelines to implement 18 Bear Smart Communities in total both Italy and Greece.
