Safe roads for bears

Making the roads safe is crucial for people and animals in Central Apennines. During the last two years – notes the observatory of Asaps, the Association supporters and friends of the Traffic Police – 360 incidents involved wildlife and were classified as “serious”.

A parliamentary question was submitted on November 23th by a group of M5S senators to the ministers of Infrastructures, Transports, Environment and Energy Security. THE NUMBERS: In the first 10 months of 2022 the Asaps Observatory has already recorded 118 road accidents in which 10 people died and 151 were injured. 94.9% of accidents occurred with wild animals and 5.1% with pets. 98 accidents occurred during the day and 20 at night. 9 on the motorway and 109 on secondary roads.

THE REQUESTS: In the document, senators ask for more “maintenance by the current motorway operator, ANAS S.p.A., to avoid openings and interruptions on the roads”. In Particular, they ask to “facilitate the safe use of existing upper and lower passages”. They also ask to continue the work started in 2021 to replace the current 120 cm fence with a 2.60 metres fence, as planned in the Strada dei Parchi S.p.A. executive project. Lastly, senators would like to know something about the investments for the build of new suitable wildlife passages.
