Yesterday in Pescasseroli the University of Rome presented the results of the non-invasive genetic census 2011, carried out for the Life ARCTOS Project in the area of the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise (PNALM) and in its area of external protection (ZPE).
The hair-samples were collected in spring-summer 2011 with different methods that led to a confidence interval of 47-61 individuals with a probable estimation of 49, showing a light increase compared to the data of 2008 (40 individuals).
A result that proves the vitality of the Marsican brown bear as a species that, though far for being out of danger, shows its ability to raise its number. Now it is the turn of the institutions to promote an active conservation policy addressed to drastically limit factors of disturbance and deaths caused by man.
We of Salviamo l’orso are watching in order that the effort to survive of our bears would not be frustrated and that the commitments will be respected by everybody, especially by PNALM, Abruzzo Region and Ministry of Environment!
