A few days ago, Salviamo l’Orso and Rewilding Apennines staff and volunteers removed barbed wire from the natural landscape of Villalago mountains. They cleared 1,700 m of fence meaning that they removed more than 5,100 m of wire in one day!
These barbed wire fences have been used since the 1950’s for reforestations and farming and are not used anymore. Today, they remain barriers in the landscapes that are a real threat to both wild and domestic animals. A fleshless leg of a horse was found entangled in the wire showing that these incidents may really occur. Non-visible barbed wire can be a hazard to people too.
Now there is far less barbed wires on the Villalago mountains – as well as many other natural places in the Central Apennines – thanks to this hard work, which is part of the ecosystem restoration actions for the project LIFE Bear-Smart Corridors!
This action is repeated throughout the year in different places.
Thank you all those who helped to protect wildlife and humans and restore landscapes!
