This year Salviamo l’Orso received crucial support from the brand Patagonia for a project focused on fighting the use of poison in natural areas. Throughout 2023, in collaboration with the Rewilding Apennines team, seven poisoning episodes were recorded, resulting in the loss of over 30 wild animals.
In response to this criminal threat, the association has taken concrete action. A Poison Detection Dog unit will be established to monitor “hotspots” where poisoning episodes have been more frequent over time. The unit, accompanied by Salviamo l’Orso volunteers, will operate mainly outside protected areas with the aim of detecting potential poisoned baits or carcasses before triggering a chain of events harmful to wildlife.
The project reflects Salviamo l’Orso’s ongoing commitment to wildlife protection and the promotion of sustainable practices. The formation of this Poison Detection Dog represents a significant step in preventing criminal acts that threaten wildlife and ecosystem balance.
